Basic Therapy Dog Class - AAA

Animal Assisted Activities (AAA) are simply social sessions, where you and your dog meet people, sometimes in groups, sometimes one-on-one, typically in a health care setting, but also at schools, colleges, libraries and other public settings. Your dog may simply be present while people pet him or talk to him or to you. He may do some tricks, rest on a lap or cuddle on a bed.

Completion of our basic therapy dog class is required of everyone who wishes to become a CHAMP Therapy Dog Team with their dog. For enrollment:

  • Dogs

    • Should be between 2 and 10 years old
    • Should be happy and comfortable when meeting new people
    • Should be confident in new situations
    • Must pass a temperament and skills evaluation to be accepted into class
    • Cannot be on a raw-food diet
    • Rescue dogs need to have lived with you for at least six months.
  • People

    • Need to fill out our Therapy Dog Application
    • Pass a background check prior to graduation
    • Sign a confidentiality statement agreeing to protect the privacy of people you meet on therapy visits
    • Agree to ensure their dog meets health requirements, including providing documentation of health, regular veterinary checks and vaccinations
    • Agree to follow flea/tick/heart worm protocols
  • When and Where

    • 2 sessions each year, usually starting in February and August.
    • Each class is 2.5 hours long, and meets once a week for 12 weeks of training. We build “off” weeks into the schedule, so calendar-time runs approximately 14 weeks.
    • Our Spring 2018 class will meet Saturday mornings at the beautiful new Humane Society of Missouri facility in Maryland Heights.
  • Fees

    • $200 for the 12-week class
    • $25 non-refundable fee to reserve your spot on the skills and temperament evaluation schedule. This will be applied towards the class fee if your dog passes the evaluation.
    • An additional fee (approximately $25) for the CHAMP Therapy Dog Cape upon successful completion of class.

To sign up for classes, or for more information, call the CHAMP office at 314-653-9466, Monday - Friday 9 a.m.-2 p.m., and ask to speak with Dana.

Our basic therapy dog class covers a lot of ground, has lots of homework and is a lot fun. Our classes are all about positive training techniques.

Class size is typically 8 to 10 dogs with three instructors, plus additional helpers from CHAMP staff and experienced therapy dog handlers.

Where Will You and Your Dog Go after Graduation?

Our basic AAA therapy dog class prepares you and your dog to make social visits to places such as hospitals, hospices, library and school reading programs, nursing homes, and adult day care programs.

Our staff tries hard to find the right fit for you and your dog among our facilities. We consider your interests, your dog’s comfort, your location, your schedule and the openings we have.

We want both your dog and you to be happy in your therapy work.
